Jake Gyllenhaal looks to be bringing another fantastic performance in Southpaw, a gritty drama that sees him play a troubled boxer who not only loses his wife, but subsequently loses his daughter when the courts rule him to be an unfit father. He struggles to get back on his feet, entering the ring once again to win back those he loves.
After the physical transformation Gyllenhaal put in to bring Louis Bloom to life in Nightcrawler, it’s downright impressive to see him undergo yet another crazy transformation to play this quick-to-anger, substance-abusing, middleweight boxer.
Director Antoine Fuqua’s resume is a mixed bag, but his standouts (Training Day, Brooklyn’s Finest) provide us with some confidence. The screenplay comes from Richard Wenk (16 Blocks, The Equalizer) and Kurt Sutter (The Shield, Sons of Anarchy).
Southpaw, also starring Forest Whitaker, 50 Cent, and Rachel McAdams, hits the USA on July 31 and Australia on August 20.
