The Schwartz is back — and after nearly four decades, Spaceballs is finally getting a sequel!
Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that Spaceballs 2 is officially moving forward, with Mel Brooks returning to reprise his role as Yogurt nearly 40 years after the original film first spoofed the space opera/sci-fi genre. The long-awaited sequel is set for a theatrical release in 2027.

A “Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two”
Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but the project is fully embracing its self-aware roots. As Amazon MGM describes it, Spaceballs 2 will be “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
In a video promoting the announcement, which you can watch below, Brooks jokingly says: “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie.”
Returning Stars & New Additions
As reported by Deadline, Bill Pullman is confirmed to return as Lone Star, with Rick Moranis reprising his role as the villainous Dark Helmet. Moranis’ return is particularly notable, marking one of his few live-action appearances in nearly 30 years.
Joining the returning stars are several new cast members. Keke Palmer has boarded the film in an undisclosed role, while Lewis Pullman, Bill Pullman’s son, has also signed on. Josh Gad will star as well, in addition to serving as co-writer and producer.
The Team Behind Spaceballs 2
The sequel will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Will & Harper. The screenplay comes from Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Samit and Hernandez have previously written projects such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Addams Family 2, and Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.
Gad previously teased the project in 2024, posting on Instagram: “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited. Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!”
Producing the film are Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody for Imagine Entertainment, alongside Gad, Brooks, and Greenbaum. Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez will serve as executive producers.
Revisiting a Cult Classic
Originally released by MGM in 1987, Spaceballs became a cult favourite for its irreverent parody of Star Wars, Alien, and other sci-fi franchises. The original followed Lone Star, Barf (played by the late John Candy), Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), and Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers), as they battled Dark Helmet and President Skroob (also played by Brooks). Though the film earned modest box office returns during its initial run, its reputation has only grown over the decades.
Now at 99 years old, Brooks returns to the world he created, adding another chapter to his legendary comedy career that includes classics like Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and History of the World, Part I.
Amazon MGM has not yet set an exact release date, but Spaceballs 2 is currently scheduled to hit the big screen sometime in 2027.
