Sony has some big television plans for their Marvel characters, and they’ve chosen Phil Lord and Chris Miller to oversee them.
Lord and Miller, who recently won Oscars for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and whose feature credits include 21 & 22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, have signed a massive deal with Sony.
As per THR, Lord and Miller will be moving from a deal at 20th Century Fox TV to a deal at Sony Pictures TV. The latter company has reportedly written up a five-year agreement with the creatives; a deal that’s said to be valued in the nine-figure range.
The pact will find Lord and Miller crafting comedy and drama projects for a variety of platforms, from broadcast to streaming to cable, and will also have them developing series projects based on the Marvel characters Sony has the rights to. Namely, Spider-Man and the plethora of characters associated with the webslinger, including all villains such as Green Goblin, Electro, Carnage, etc; Venom, which has its film franchise underway with Tom Hardy starring; Morbius, which is currently being filmed with Jared Leto in the lead; and Black Cat and Silver Sable, which are the focus of a film currently in development.
Sony has plenty of characters to pick from – just take a look at the line up in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, for example. Spider-Ham series, anyone?
“We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio,” Lord and Miller said in a statement. “Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”
Lord and Miller will soon be directing Sony film Last Human, a sci-fi film set in a future in which robots have eliminated humans, following a 12-year-old robot who discovers and befriends a human girl.
