Netflix has dropped a tantalising teaser for Squid Game Season 2 and, most crucially, revealed the official release date: the second instalment arrives on December 26th.

Squid Game Season 1 introduced audiences to the high-stakes K-drama where participants risk their lives for a chance at a transformative cash prize, or face dire consequences. The story follows Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), and Season 2 will continue after his shocking decisions at the end of the first season.

What’s the plot for Squid Game season 2? Here’s the official synopsis:

“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”

Who will star in season 2?

Returning to the cast are familiar faces like Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Gong Yoo, and Wi Ha-jun. New cast members joining the ensemble include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an, adding vibrant new characters to the mix.

Will there be a Squid Game season 3?

In additional exciting news, Season 3 has been confirmed. While it’s thrilling to anticipate another season, it comes with the bittersweet revelation that it will be the series’ conclusion, expected to premiere on Netflix in 2025.

Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk has a message for fans:

“It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place,” director Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote in a letter to fans that was shared on Instagram.

“On the first day, we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game. It almost felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years as well.”

He added, “Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Frontman doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”

So there we have it, Squid Game fans. Prepare yourself for the thrilling return on December 26th and the climactic finale in 2025.
