Paramount Pictures has unveiled a new trailer for Star Trek Beyond, offering up new footage and plugging Rihanna’s track, “Sledgehammer,” set to be included in the film’s soundtrack.
Rihanna’s new song drives home a more dramatic marketing piece than those we’ve seen previously. Reminding us that Chris Hemsworth played George Kirk, the new trailer inserts Kirk’s (Chris Pine) family ties, with Karl Urban’s Bones deducing, “You spent all this time trying to be your dad, and now you’re wondering, what it means to be you.”
Cue the Enterprise going down as Kirk gives his last report as the Captain.
It certainly looks like the third Star Trek film in the rebooted franchise will be aiming to raise the stakes a bit, giving our hero a bit of soul searching and putting his crew in what may very well be their worst experience yet.
Of course, there’s another major element that has us approaching Star Trek Beyond with bittersweet emotions, and that’s Anton Yelchin. The late actor carved out his own part of the Trek universe playing Chekov, and thankfully he completed his role in the third film before his tragic departure.
Star Trek Beyond, also starring Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Idris Elba, Karl Urban and Sofia Boutella, will arrive in Australia on July 21 and hit the U.S. on July 22.
