Disney’s upcoming Han Solo-focused Star Wars spin-off film will also include our hero’s hairy buddy.
Speaking to investors at the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference, Disney chief Bob Iger confirmed that Han Solo and Chewy are to be the focus of a still-untitled prequel spin-off.
Of course, first up is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, being directed by Monsters and Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards.
“Rogue One… is about a band of rebels plotting to steal the plans to the Death Star,” Iger said. “It takes place right before what was George Lucas‘s first film, which came out in 1977 and is now called A New Hope.”
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is lined up for U.S. release on December 16.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will follow, with Looper filmmaker Rian Johnson on board as both writer and director. Episode 8 hits U.S. screens on December 15, 2017. After that…
“We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy. And that’ll come after Star Wars 8 in 2018. And then there’ll be possibly be more thereafter.”
There you have it, Chewy confirmed. The untitled Han Solo anthology film is to be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo known for bringing us 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, and The Lego Movie. The film, which will certainly be driving home some nostalgia (considering what took place in Star Wars: The Force Awakens), is currently scheduled for U.S. release on May 25, 2018.
The question now: Who will be cast as the young Han Solo? A few names have been making their way through the rumour circuit, including Chris Pratt, Taron Egerton, and Scott Eastwood.
