Lucasfilm has unveiled the official trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the upcoming adventure taking the duo to the big screen. Watch the trailer above, then read on for what to expect from the first Star Wars release to hit cinemas in seven years.
Mando and Grogu Head Into a Fractured Galaxy
Set after the fall of the Empire, the film finds Imperial warlords scattered across the galaxy while the fledgling New Republic works to secure the fragile peace won by the Rebellion. To help keep the remnants of tyranny in check, the New Republic enlists legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his increasingly capable apprentice, Grogu.

Din and Grogu’s latest run-in looks like it’ll take them straight into Hutt territory, with the trailer teasing a mission tied to the slug-like crime dynasty’s ongoing influence in the post-Empire vacuum. Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt, who makes a muscle-first impression swinging a massive axe, while the ominous Hutt twins also loom in the background. Whatever deal Din is trying to strike, the footage makes it pretty clear things go sideways fast.
Elsewhere, the trailer leans into fan-service in a way that still feels purposeful. Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios pops back up with Steve Blum returning on vocal duties, and The Clone Wars bounty hunter Embo re-emerges, bowcaster in hand. There’s also a blink-and-you’ll-hear-it cameo: an Ardennian trader voiced by filmmaker Martin Scorsese. And yes, we finally get a proper look at Sigourney Weaver as New Republic officer Colonel Ward.
One of the standout moments in the trailer is Din Djarin going mask-off. Mando has taken off the helmet four times in the series, so this isn’t a first, but showing this moment in the trailer does suggest that the film will give Pascal a bit more to work with face-wise and hints that the character may be pushed into more emotionally exposed territory.
The Creative Team
Back behind the camera is Jon Favreau (Iron Man, 2019’s The Lion King), the creator who launched The Mandalorian on Disney+. He co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Filoni, who is deeply well-versed in the Star Wars galaxy, with writing credits spanning Rebels, The Clone Wars, Tales of the Jedi, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
On the producing side, Favreau is joined by Kathleen Kennedy, Filoni and Ian Bryce. Ludwig Göransson returns to compose the score after shaping the sound of the series, and David Klein serves as cinematographer, having previously shot five episodes of The Mandalorian.
Release Date
The Mandalorian and Grogu opens in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on May 21, and in U.S. cinemas on May 22.
