DC Universe’s ‘Stargirl’ Series Will Have Joel McHale Playing Starman

Actor, comedian and author Joel McHale is set to star as a DC Comics superhero in an upcoming series.

Stargirl, heading to the DC Universe streaming service, will star Brec Bassinger (The Goldbergs) as the titular DC character, aka Courteney Whitmore. Stargirl is a high school sophomore who inspires a group of heroes to take on villains of the past.

According to Variety, McHale will be joining Bassinger in a recurring role as Justice Society of America member Starman. The character of Starman holds an anti-gravity weapon, the cosmic staff, and has a sidekick, Stripesy, who’s also Whitmore’s stepfather.

Stargirl is to be executive produced by longtime creative DC names Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns – the latter of whom created this character inspired by his late sister. Johns is also attached as the series showrunner.

McHale is known for his roles in TV shows such as Community, The X-Files revival and The Great Indoors, as well as parts in films such as A Merry Friggin Christmas, Deliver Us from Evil and this year’s Assassination Murders. He had his own Netflix commentary show this year with The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale, but the streaming giant opted to cancel it after 19 episodes.
