The film was recently completed and Netflix swooped in to acquire it for distribution. Deadline reports that the streaming giant put up a multi-million-dollar deal to have release rights in Australia, New Zealand, the US, UK, India, Latina America, Africa and other markets in Europe and Asia. Sony was originally attached to distribute the project in 2018, but has since fallen off.
Stowaway will be following the crew aboard a mission to mars. After an unintended stowaway (Shamier Anderson, Wynonna Earp) accidentally causes major damage to the craft’s life-support systems, a medical researcher (Kendrick) is soon the only dissenting voice against the clinical logic of both her commander (Collette) and the ship’s biologist (Daniel Dae Kim, Hawaii Five-0).
The pic was directed and co-written by Joe Penna, making his sophomore feature following his Mads Mikkelsen-starring debut, 2018 survival drama Arctic (our review of that one is HERE). He wrote the script for Stowaway with his Arctic co-writer Ryan Morrison.
Stowaway will be streaming on Netflix sometime in 2021.
