Sub-Zero has been cast in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, which is currently in the works at New Line Cinema.
The role has gone to Indonesian actor Joe Taslim, who broke out with The Raid and went to on star opposite that film’s lead, Iko Uwais, in the brutal Netflix actioner The Night Comes for Us (our review of that one HERE). He’s a strong screen presence and is a renowned martial artist, having been a member of Indonesia’s national Judo team.
James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring) is producing via his Atomic Monster banner, with commercial director Simon McQuoid set to make his feature directorial debut with the film. The screenplay comes from up-and-coming writer Greg Russo, who’s also been circling a new Resident Evil film.
Sub-Zero was among the first characters in the hugely popular Mortal Kombat game franchise, appearing in the first game released in ’92. The fighter, who has the power to control ice in many forms, is also know for his rivalry with Scorpion.
Taslim is the first cast member to sign on the dotted line for Mortal Kombat; you can expect more to be announced soon. So far, so good. We’ve been fans of Taslim since seeing him in The Raid, and it’s good to see him earn a big role like this. The new Mortal Kombat movie will be shooting in South Australia later this year, with a US release scheduled for March 5, 2021.
