A new trailer has dropped for Suffragette, an upcoming drama starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep.
The film tells the true story of the women who took part in the British suffragette movement, which saw the rise of feminist foot soldiers take on the government to ensure equality was given.
Suffragette certainly has a lot going for it. The three strong lead actresses work off a screenplay by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady), and the direction by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) looks competent, we’re just worried the film may be a little too emotionally forced and conventional for its own good. We’ll see.
Suffragette, also starring Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson, and Anne-Marie Duff, will be hitting the U.K. on October 12 and the U.S. on October 23.
Synopsis for Suffragette:
A drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Maud was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational.
