‘Superman’ Soars with Big Box Office Opening, James Gunn Shares Heartfelt Message to Fans

[Latest update – 15 July 2025: Superman has passed US$220 million worldwide.]

The new era of DC has officially lifted off. Superman, the first chapter of James Gunn’s rebooted cinematic universe, has opened to a strong US$217 million at the global box office, including US$122 million from domestic audiences — giving Warner Bros. and DC Studios the third US$100M+ debut of the year, alongside A Minecraft Movie and Lilo & Stitch.

It’s an encouraging result for the high-stakes franchise reboot, which aims to set the tone for a new interconnected DC Universe. The film began its international rollout on July 9 and pulled in around US$95 million overseas across its first wave of territories. With a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 83% from critics and 93% from audiences, early reception suggests the reboot has struck a chord.

What Will Superman Need to Make to Be Considered a Success?

The studio has not revealed an official profitability target, but estimates suggest that Superman will need to gross in the ballpark of US$700 million globally to be considered a clear win. The reported production budget is US$225 million after tax incentives, and some reports have cited marketing costs at around US$200 million. Some insiders point to a breakeven threshold between US$560 million and US$675 million.

Director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn, however, has pushed back on what he sees as inflated expectations. In a recent GQ profile of star David Corenswet, Gunn said, “This is not the riskiest endeavor in the world. Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be. They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes $700 million or something and it’s just complete and utter nonsense.”

Nonetheless, The Wall Street Journal has reported that Warner Bros. would be content with a worldwide total above US$500 million — so long as reviews and fan response remain strong.

James Gunn Reacts to the Film’s Opening

Over the weekend, Gunn addressed the early box office success and warm reception in a message to fans on Threads. “I’m incredibly grateful for your enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days,” he wrote. “We’ve had a lot of ‘Super’ in Superman over the years, and I’m happy to have made a movie that focuses on the ‘man’ part of the equation – a kind person always looking out for those in need. That that resonates so powerfully with so many people across the world is in itself a hopeful testament to the kindness and quality of human beings.”

The film’s emotional tone and human focus have been a recurring talking point in reviews, many of which praise Corenswet’s grounded take on the character. He stars opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.

A Promising Start for the DC Universe Reboot

While it remains to be seen whether Superman can soar to the financial heights it may ultimately need, Warner Bros. and DC Studios are likely breathing a sigh of relief. The film’s strong start comes amid a sluggish year for Hollywood and gives Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe a much-needed early win — not just with numbers, but with tone, reception, and renewed audience interest.
