The Man of Steel Comes Under Fire in Big New ‘Superman’ Trailer

The big official trailer has landed for Superman, the first big-screen chapter of the DC universe reboot from writer-director James Gunn. Take a look above.

David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent/Superman, who finds himself caught between his mission to help humanity and a world wary of his actions. The trailer opens with an interview between Clark and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), who we see knows all about his super alter ego.

“Recently you’ve come under a lot of fire,” she points out, questioning his solo intervention in a foreign conflict. “I stopped a war,” he responds. Lois nails the point harder: that some out there may not see it his way and he should be ready for the hard questions. “Maybe. In effect, you illegally entered a country. Did you consult with the President? You, seemingly acting as a representative of the United States -”

“I wasn’t representing anybody except for me!” a frustrated Clark says.  “And doing good.” The U.S. government, however, isn’t so sure—enter Frank Grillo’s Secretary of Defense and talk of legal consequences.

Amid political fallout and escalating distrust, the trailer offers glimpses of large-scale action and emotional grounding. From explosive battles with mysterious new villains (including María Gabriela de Faría’s Engineer) to a quiet embrace between Clark and his adoptive father (Pruitt Taylor Vince), Gunn seems to be striking a tonal balance between myth and humanity. There’s also more of the scene-stealing Krypto the Superdog, who we see both in action and chilling with his best friend in Clark’s childhood bedroom.

The film features a stacked ensemble: Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Gunn directs from his own screenplay, based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. He also produces alongside Peter Safran.

Fingers firmly crossed for this one. Superman flies into Australian cinemas July 10 and into U.S. theatres July 11.
