Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi plays an imaginary Hitler in his next movie, and our first look at him in character has arrived.
The filmmaker/writer/actor took to social media to unveil an image of himself in full Hitler garb, complete with that mustache, seated at a dinner table alongside the film’s leads, Scarlett Johansson and newcomer Roman Griffin Davis. “Possibly the weirdest dinner I’ve ever been to,” he posted.
Based on the novel Caging Skies by New Zealand author Christine Leunens and adapted by Waititi, the film follows a young German boy (Davis) being raised by a single mother (Johansson). His only ally is his imaginary friend, Hitler (Waititi). The boy’s naïve patriotism is tested when he meets a young girl (Thomasin McKenzie) who upends his world views, forcing him to face his biggest fears.
“We’ve assembled an incredible cast and I couldn’t be more excited to finally ridicule Nazis and their beliefs,” Waititi said about Jojo Rabbit earlier this month. “This film is going to piss off a lot of racists and that makes me very happy.”
Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson also star in the film, which is currently filming in and around Prague, Czech Republic.
