‘The Aeronauts’ Trailer: Felicity Jones & Eddie Redmayne Head to the Skies

Amazon Studios

Amazon Studios has released the trailer for The Aeronauts, an upcoming biographical adventure that reunites The Theory of Everything stars Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne.

The film is based on the pioneering exploits of meteorologist James Glaisher, played by Redmayne here, who hit extreme heights in the 1800s during various expeditions in hot air balloons. Jones plays Amelia Wren, a daredevil balloon pilot who teams up with him to further human knowledge. What begins as an exciting journey soon turns into a fight for survival.

Wren is a fictional character, which has been the cause of some controversy since the character essentially removed the inclusion of real-life ballooning pioneer Henry Coxwell, the other actual person that was with Glaisher on this record-breaking flight in 1862. Hmmm.

That plot change-up aside, this trailer is actually very promising, suggesting we could be in for an exciting film that will benefit from the biggest screen possible (unfortunately for those in the US, a release date change pushed the film away from an IMAX release). War & Peace and Peaky Blinders helmer Tom Harper directs from a screenplay by Jack Thorne (Wonder).

The Aeronauts, also starring Phoebe Fox, Himesh Patel, Vincent Perez, and Anne Reid, will be in US cinemas on December 6.

Official synopsis for The Aeronauts:

In 1862, daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) teams up with pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) to advance human knowledge of the weather and fly higher than anyone in history. While breaking records and advancing scientific discovery, their voyage to the very edge of existence helps the unlikely pair find their place in the world they have left far below them. But they face physical and emotional challenges in the thin air, as the ascent becomes a fight for survival.
