Okay, everyone can rest easy now. The Avengers 2 and 3 will have Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Collider has reported that Downey has signed a two-picture deal to star in the next two sequels.
For those that didn’t know, Downey’s contract was the first to finish amongst the actors signed on to Marvel. He has been with Marvel the longest and was with them before they introduced a 9-picture-deal for newcomers.
Robert Downey Jr. helped start Marvel’s incredibly successful series of films, and this means that he can charge quite a bit to continue to be a part of their world. He told GQ that he made around $50 million for The Avengers. When GQ had asked him about the possibility of returning for Iron Man 3 and 4, Downey replied, “Here’s the thing. At whatever point I’m done with this, I’m going to have a bit of a crisis, because I probably haven’t even fully ingested how much I’ve enjoyed it, how much it’s meant. It so came out of kind of relative obscurity as this second-tier character from the Marvel universe, and I feel I was part of making it something more. But it also to me was just good filmmaking.”
Fingers crossed the next two films in The Avengers line do as well as the first. Unfortunately, at this point it does not seem likely that Robert Downey Jr. will be doing Iron Man 4.
