Robert Pattinson takes on the mantle as the Dark Knight in the hero’s next big-screen adventure, which is finally on the way after a bumpy path to fruition (Affleck was once set to lead a Batman movie that he was to direct from a script he had co-written). Cloverfield, Let Me In, and Dawn of/War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves directs this one, with a cast that includes Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, and Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler.
The trailer hints at a moody, gritty and decidedly grim Batman film – something that may even make Nolan’s The Dark Knight seem light-hearted in comparison. It’s a strong teaser, not giving away much in the way of plot, showcasing an almost Se7en-esque tone and introducing Pattinson’s ultra-troubled-looking Bruce Wayne, Kravitz’s Catwoman, and Jeffery Wright’s James Gordon. Could that be Farrell in heavy make-up firing a gun in the rain? And The Riddler gets his spotlight: “From your secret friends. Who? Haven’t a clue? Let’s play a game. Just me and you.”
The Batman, also starring John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Barry Keoghan as Officer Stanley Merkel, Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál, and Andy Serkis as Alfred, hits cinemas on October 1st, 2021.
