‘The Bride’ Trailer: Maggie Gyllenhaal Reanimates Frankenstein with Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale

Warner Bros. has unveiled the official teaser for The Bride, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s bold-looking riff on the Frankenstein myth starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. The footage points to a creative, potentially daring spin on the tale. Watch the teaser above and read on for the essentials.

Story & cast

A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) makes for 1930s Chicago to persuade pioneering scientist Dr Euphronious (five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening) to build him a companion. They resurrect a murdered young woman — and the Bride (Buckley) jolts into life. Then the wheels come off: murder, possession, a radical cultural wave, and outlaw lovers tearing through the rulebook. Also in the mix: Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal and Penélope Cruz.

Behind the camera

Gyllenhaal writes and directs, producing alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman Keren (executive producers: Carla Raij, David Webb, Courtney Kivowitz).

The craft team is stacked: cinematography by Lawrence Sher (Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux), production design by Karen Murphy (Elvis), editing by Dylan Tichenor (There Will Be Blood), music supervision by Randall Poster (The Wolf of Wall Street), score by Hildur Guðnadóttir (Chernobyl, Joker), and costumes by Sandy Powell (The Favourite, Carol).

Context & release date

This is Gyllenhaal’s second feature as director after 2021’s The Lost Daughter — which also earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay — and it lands amid a mini-Frankenstein moment: Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein arrives on Netflix in November. Expect sparks.

The Bride opens in Australian cinemas on March 5 and U.S. cinemas on March 6, 2026.
