Emma Watson may be working for a dangerous tech company in The Circle, the upcoming thriller also starring Tom Hanks and John Boyega.

STX Entertainment has dropped a new trailer for the film, which tells of a young woman (Watson) who scores a job at the world’s largest and most powerful tech & social media company. All seems well, and the company’s founder (Hanks) seems great, but how far is too far when the boundaries of privacy and ethics are being pushed?

It’s certainly timely stuff, seeing as how far technology has come over the last couple of decades and the troubling reach that social media allows those with ill intentions. With Watson and Hanks in the lead and director James Ponsoldt (Smashed, The Spectacular Now, The End of the Tour) at the helm, here’s hoping for a riveting, topical thriller.

The Circle, also starring Karen Gillan, Bill Paxton, Patton Oswalt, Ellen Wong and Ellar Coltrane, opens in the US on April 28 and arrives in Australia on May 4.

Official synopsis for The Circle:

When Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech & social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime. As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes begin to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and that of humanity.
