In what doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, New Line Cinema is moving ahead with a third Conjuring film.
This particular cinematic universe is growing and growing. We have a prequel to the Conjuring spinoff Annabelle on the way in the form of Annabelle: Creation and the studio has also greenlit spinoffs The Nun and The Crooked Man. Now you can add The Conjuring 3 to the line-up.
According to Deadline, New Line has hired The Conjuring 2 screenwriter David Leslie Johnson to stay on the franchise and pen the threequel. Johnson is no stranger to horror, having also penned Orphan, episodes of AMC’s The Walking Dead and New Line’s planned reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
As of now, it’s looking a doubtful that James Wan will stay on as director. Wan, who directed both The Conjuring and its sequel to the tune $US638.3 million worldwide combined, is expected to stay on as producer with Peter Safran.
Apart from The Conjuring 2, Johnson and Wan’s working relationship also includes Wan’s upcoming DCEU picture Aquaman. Johnson reportedly helped on a rewrite of the superhero pic, which is scheduled for U.S. release on December 21, 2018.
Annabelle: Creation is next up in the Conjuring Cinematic Universe, arriving in Australia on August 10 and hitting the U.S. on August 11.
