That’s right, it has actually arrived.
Sony Pictures has finally dropped the first official trailer for The Dark Tower, the big-screen Stephen King adaptation set to hit cinemas in just three months.
Idris Elba stars as Roland Deschain, the last Gunslinger, who’s been locked in an eternal conflict with Walter O’Dim, aka the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), to stop him from toppling the Dark Tower and destroying the universe. A young boy, Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), from our world finds himself on their plane, caught up in one hell of a battle.
Fans of the books will surely have a lot to say with the liberties being taken here. So, placing the source material aside (if possible) and looking at this on its own merits, The Dark Tower looks to be a slick fantasy action-adventure, with two solid leads to boot. There’s certainly more of a “Hollywood blockbuster” feel than many may have been expecting, although we’ll see if that’s an overall negative sign or a sign of confident mainstream fare.
Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) directs from a screenplay he penned with Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend), Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Anders Thomas Jensen (The Duchess, The Salvation).
The Dark Tower, also starring Katheryn Winnick, Abbey Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, Nicholas Hamilton and Dennis Haysbert, opens in the US on August 4 and arrives in Australia on August 17.
