The claws are out in the official teaser trailer for The Girlfriend, Prime Video’s upcoming six-part psychological thriller drama starring Robin Wright (House of Cards) and Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon). Take a look at the teaser above and learn more below.
A mother, a girlfriend, and a whole lot of suspicion
More on Screen Realm:
Based on Michelle Frances’ bestselling novel, the series has Wright playing Laura, a successful art gallery owner whose carefully composed life begins to fracture when her beloved son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson), brings home a new girlfriend. Enter Cherry, played by Cooke, whose charm doesn’t fool Laura for a second.
At first, it’s just unease. A few stares. A carefully phrased comment. But soon, it’s clear: these two women are circling each other like predators — each unsure what the other is really hiding. Cherry might be manipulating her way into Daniel’s heart… or maybe Laura’s paranoia is blinding her to the truth. The teaser doesn’t answer much — it just drops hints and lets the tension simmer.
One scene shows Daniel gushing about Cherry like he’s never done before, while Laura looks on, clearly unsettled. There’s also what at least looks like a blood-soaked cake-cutting moment at a wedding.
Cast, creatives, and the source material
The series is created by Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, with Wright also on board as executive producer. Alongside Wright, Cooke, and Davidson, the cast includes Waleed Zuaiter, Tayna Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn, Anna Chancellor, Leo Suter, and Francesca Corney.
Not only does Wright lead the series and serve as executive producer — she’s also behind the camera. Wright directs the first three of the show’s six episodes, continuing a growing list of directing credits that includes ten episodes of House of Cards, two episodes of Ozark, one episode of Tell Me Lies, and the 2021 feature Land, which she also headlined. Episodes four to six of The Girlfriend are directed by Andrea Harkin, whose credits include episodes of Time, Soulmates, and The Trial of Christine Keeler.
