Elle Fanning stars as Catherine the Great in the upcoming Hulu series The Great, which the actress also executive produces.
The official trailer has arrived for the series, which is described as “a satirical, comedic drama” with “only occasional historical facts.” Indeed, farcical elements are scattered throughout the trailer below. And if the style of it all reminds you heavily of Yorgos Lanthimos’ acclaimed 2018 film The Favourite, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it comes from that film’s Oscar-nominated co-writer, Tony McNamara. The Favourite‘s Nicholas Hoult is also here, playing Peter III.
It looks deliciously mischievous, with Fanning seemingly perfectly cast as a young woman with an eye on greatness – if the “idiot” she’s married is gone, well… she can step right on up. Putting this one on the list, for sure. Let’s hope it fares much better than last year’s ill-received HBO mini-series Catherine the Great, which had Helen Mirren in the lead role.
The Great, which also stars Phoebe Fox, Gwilym Lee, Louis Hynes, Sacha Dhawan and Sebastian De Souza, hits Hulu on May 15.
