Take a look at the trailer that’s arrived for upcoming Netflix movie The Half of It, a teen romantic comedy putting a twist on the clichéd rom-com tropes.
Leah Lewis (The Gifted, Nancy Drew) plays Ellie, a straight-A student living in a small U.S. town. She makes cash writing essays for classmates and is hired by sweet but inarticulate jock Paul (Daniel Diemer) to help him win over a popular girl. The new and unlikely friendship that begins to develop between Ellie and Paul gets complicated when they discover they have feelings for the same girl.
This looks wonderful, skirting around familiar teen-romance elements with what what looks like an emotional, honest look at friendship and love – and how they’re not as simple as often depicted. The trailer is doing very well for a Netflix Original that isn’t based on already-popular I.P. – it’s number 17 on YouTube’s trending list at the time of writing, so signs are pointing to a highly-watched film here. Fingers crossed it’s great.
The Half of It, the sophomore effort from writer-director Alice Wu (Saving Face), will begin streaming on Netflix on May 1st.
