Take a look at the trailer released for upcoming thriller The Hunt, which is thankfully not a remake of the phenomenal Mads Mikkelsen-starring 2012 film of the same name.
The film follows twelve strangers that wake up in a clearing, unaware of why they are there. As it turns out, they’re the prey in a hunt being held by the “elite.” GLOW star Betty Gilpin plays Crystal, one of the hunted that won’t make it easy for those after her. Hilary Swank plays the mysterious woman who’s behind the whole concept.
Films with straightforward ‘who dies next and how’ narratives depend heavily on surprise plot turns to work well. So, maybe it’s not a great idea to have a trailer that includes as many beats as this. Just show them waking up in the field, perhaps one or two shock deaths, and a quick tease of Swank as the baddie. That’s all you need. Instead… sigh.
Trailer reveals aside, this could be a fun exercise in macabre Battle Royale mayhem. There’s a good amount going for it, including director Craig Zobel (Compliance, Z for Zachariah) and a solid cast that also includes Emma Roberts, Ike Barinholtz and Macon Blair, with Gilpin getting a much deserved lead role in a mainstream feature.
Perhaps the most enticing thing, at least for this writer, is the fact that it’s like a reunion of creatives behind fantastic HBO series The Leftovers. Leftovers co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof co-wrote the script with Leftovers staff writer Nick Cuse, and Zobel directed three episodes of the show (including standout ep The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)).
The Hunt, also starring Ethan Suplee and Justin Harley, will be hitting the US on September 27 and arriving in Australia on October 17.
Official synopsis for The Hunt:
Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt.
In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a bunch of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt humans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of the hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.
From Jason Blum, the producer of Get Out and The Purge series, and Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the TV series The Leftovers and Lost, comes a new mysterious social thriller.
The Hunt is written by Lindelof and his fellow The Leftovers’ collaborator Nick Cuse and is directed by Craig Zobel (Z for Zachariah, The Leftovers). Blum produces for his Blumhouse Productions alongside Lindelof. The film is executive produced by Zobel, Cuse and Steven R. Molen.
