The first trailer has been released for The Hustle, an upcoming remake starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson.
The comedy finds Hathaway and Wilson playing two scam artists. Wilson isn’t quite up to the calibre of Hathaway, who decides to take her under her wing to take down some of the guys that have wronged them in the past.
So yeah, it’s a gender-flipped remake of 1988 comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine as the two scammers. Remake haters should take note: that one was also a remake, of 1964 comedy Bedtime Story, starring Marlon Brando and David Niven. Now, whether the trend of gender-flipping old male-led films as opposed to crafting originals… there could be a bit of a debate there.
This could be a fun film, particularly if Hathaway and Wilson’s chemistry works well. Hathaway looks to be having a good time, particularly with that questionable English accent. And Wilson’s doing… Wilson, so you’ll likely have a decent time if you’re a fan of her brand of comedy.
This was filmed in 2017 and has been circling a release date since. It’s the feature debut for director Chris Addison, who’s perhaps best known for directing 13 episodes of Veep.
The Hustle, also starring Alex Sharp, Tim Blake Nelson, and Dean Norris, hits Aussie cinemas on March 9 and US cinemas on March 10.
