Pixar’s superhero family is officially suiting up once again — this time with a new director at the helm.
The Incredibles 3 is moving ahead with Pixar veteran Peter Sohn attached to direct, taking over from franchise creator Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Ratatouille), who helmed the first two films. While Bird will not be directing this time, he remains heavily involved, currently writing the threequel’s screenplay and producing alongside Dana Murray (Soul).
A longtime Pixar veteran, Sohn previously directed Elemental and The Good Dinosaur, and has worked on every animated film Bird has directed, including the first two Incredibles movies. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Bird has long served as a mentor of sorts to Sohn, and both he and Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter selected him to carry the franchise forward.

Sohn’s most recent Pixar outing, Elemental, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature last year. In addition to his directing work, Sohn has voiced several characters across Pixar projects, including Ratatouille (where he voiced Émile, the older brother of lead rat character Remy), Monsters University, and Lightyear.
The Incredibles franchise remains one of Pixar’s biggest successes, both critically and commercially. The first film, which hit cinemas back in 2004, raked in over $US631 million from a budget of $US92 million and was handed the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The long-awaited sequel, Incredibles 2, was released 14 years later to a massive box office draw: $US1.24 billion globally from a budget of $US200 million. With just two films, the franchise has generated over $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office.
The series follows Bob and Helen Parr (voiced by Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter), a married superhero couple living undercover in the suburbs with their three super-powered children: Violet (voiced by Sarah Vowell), Dash (voiced by Spencer Fox), and baby Jack-Jack. The franchise also features Samuel L. Jackson as Frozone, Bob’s best friend and fellow crime-fighter.
Disney first announced The Incredibles 3 during its D23 Expo in August 2024. At the time, Bird was said to be “developing” the project. A busy schedule, which currently includes directing the upcoming Skydance animated feature Ray Gunn, appears to be the primary reason he won’t be in the director’s chair this time around.
Pixar is currently preparing for the release of its next feature, Elio, which opens in cinemas in June. A release date for The Incredibles 3 has not yet been set.
