Some nice news for fans of Netflix‘s rom-com franchise The Kissing Booth.
Not only is a third film lined up for a 2021 release, it turns out the threequel has already been filmed – quietly shot in South Africa in tandem with the second film. Plus, Netflix has released a teaser clip for fans to watch!
First up, here’s the sneak peek:
Joey King, the franchise’s star and executive producer, told fans of the news during a live-stream event. Director and writer Vince Marcello returns for the third film, which will be continuing on from where the sequel left Elle (King). Returning cast members include Taylor Zakhar Perez, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Meganne Young and Molly Ringwald.
The plot, as reported by Deadline, will find Elle torn with a big decision she has to make.
She has been accepted into Harvard, where boyfriend Noah [Jacob Elordi] is matriculating, and also Berkeley, where her BFF Lee (Noah’s brother) [Joel Courtney] is headed. Which path should she choose?
Despite poor critical responses (a 17% Rotten Tomatoes score for the first film and 30% for the second), the Kissing Booth films have clearly been doing well with audiences and for Netflix. The streamer, notorious for keeping its viewer ratings under wraps, said the 2018 first film was their most re-watched original feature of that year and the sequel quickly shot to its weekly Top Ten list after release.
