Director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) returns with The Light Between Oceans, a drama starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz.
The film tells the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife, played by Fassbender and Vikander, who stumble upon an adrift rowboat carrying a dead man and a baby. They raise the baby girl to be their own. Life looks to be going well, that is until a widow (Weisz) comes along with a potentially devastating revelation.
Cianfrance writes and directs this adaptation of the novel penned by Australian-born author M.L. Stedman, and it looks gorgeous. There’s a Terrence Malick-type quality on display with the beautiful cinematography (Animal Kingdom and Macbeth D.O.P. Adam Arkapaw is behind the lens), the cast is downright impressive and the story could pack an emotional punch. If Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines are anything to go by, Cianfrance could very well have another winner here.
The film was shot in Tasmania, Australia and Marlborough and Otago in New Zealand.
The Light Between Oceans is currently scheduled to hit the U.S. on September 2. An Australian release date is expected to be announced soon.
