Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Jungle Book), the film follows a future king lion cub whose life takes a turn and he finds himself in exile. His journey… okay, you know the plot. The first look below shows off an almost shot-for-shot redo, turning those gorgeous animated scenes into CG-fueled, live-action renditions. Visually, it looks impressive, which isn’t too surprising when you have that Disney money.
It’s more of a teaser, so we don’t get many characters or a look/listen at the voice cast bringing them to life. The cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and John Oliver as Zazu.
Disney is in full swing with their live-action remakes. 2019 will have Disney giving us Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin in May and The Lion King in July. Among the many Disney redos on the horizon, this may be the one this writer is the most cautious about; it’s my favourite animated Disney film. Please be good. Please be good. Please be good.
The Lion King arrives in Australia on July 18 and hits US cinemas on July 19, 2019.
Official synopsis for The Lion King:

Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.
