Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming limited series The Madness, a twisty conspiracy thriller series led by Emmy-winning actor Colman Domingo.
Domingo, celebrated for roles in Rustin, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Sing Sing, and Fear the Walking Dead, plays Muncie Daniels, a CNN media pundit whose life unravels after he witnesses a murder in the remote woods of the Poconos. His predicament is further complicated by the victim’s identity: a white supremacist. Forced to prove his innocence, Muncie embarks on a perilous journey to survive, reconnect with his estranged family, and rediscover the ideals he once championed.
In a behind-the-scenes featurette you can watch below, Domingo describes the complexity of his character, explaining how Muncie represents a figure who’s become polarised by his community. “Sometimes looked at as being not Black enough, and then to some folks, too Black,” he notes. “He’s a lit bit removed from the communities he was advocating for.”
The show’s ensemble cast includes Marsha Stephanie Blake (When They See Us), Gabrielle Graham (Twenties), John Ortiz (Silver Linings Playbook), Tamsin Topolski (The Diplomat), Deon Cole (The Colour Purple), and Thaddeus J. Mixson (Reasonable Doubt).
Created by Stephen Belber (O.G., The Laramie Project) and co-showrunner VJ Boyd (Justified), the series is helmed by director Clement Virgo (Greenleaf), who also serves as an executive producer.
Virgo describes the series as a reflection of today’s social media-driven reality, calling it “a metaphor for the world we are in now.” Belber echoes the sentiment, saying, “We’re in a sort of world where the notion of objectivity is really hard to come by, as we navigate our way through all the information that’s coming at us 24/7.”
All eight episodes of The Madness will be released on Netflix on 28 November.
