The first trailer has been released for The Meddler, an upcoming dramedy starring Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne.
Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, who penned Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist and wrote-directed the Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley-starring Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, The Meddler tells the story of a recent widow (Sarandon) who moves from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter (Rose Byrne).
Sure, this looks very familiar, but there’s enough well-meaning sweetness going on to hopefully warrant a viewing. Sarandon and Byrne are both good value, and Scafaria’s previous scripts have juggled simple character-driven plots that, while embracing saccharine cliches, manage to mostly work. Also, we’re digging the inclusion of Oscar winner J.K. Simmons and SNL‘s Cecily Strong. A harmless, well-acted dramedy or just eye-rolling schmaltz? We’ll see.
The Meddler begins a limited U.S. run on April 22 and a limited Australia run on May 19.
