StudioCanal has unveiled the first trailer for The Mercy, the upcoming true story picture starring Oscar winners Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.

Directed by The Theory of Everything helmer James Marsh, The Mercy tells the true story of Donald Crowhurst (Firth), a British businessman and amateur sailor who endeavored to become the first person in history to single-handedly sail around the globe in one trip. We don’t want to deliver spoilers (although it’s a documented true story), so let’s just say things didn’t exactly go smoothly. If you want to know what happened, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his trip, you can check out Wikipedia (I know, but hey – it has the info).

It appears that Firth is putting in quite the performance here, particularly as Crowhurst’s mental health dwindles on the seas. And if you want an actress that can elevate the ‘concerned wife at home’ role, Weisz is certainly more than capable.

Marsh delivered a winning true story drama with the aforementioned Stephen Hawking biopic (which earned Eddie Redmayne an Best Actor win) and has delivered strong documentaries with Man on Wire and Project Nim. Fingers crossed.

The Mercy, also starring David Thewlis and Ken Stott, will arrive in Australia on 8 March 2018.

Official synopsis for The Mercy:

Following his Academy Award® winning film, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, James Marsh directs the incredible true story of Donald Crowhurst (Academy Award® winner Colin Firth, THE KING’S SPEECH, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, THE RAILWAY MAN), an amateur sailor who competed in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in the hope of becoming the first person in history to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping. With an unfinished boat and his business and house on the line, Donald leaves his wife, Clare (Academy Award ® winner Rachel Weisz, THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS, THE LOBSTER) and their children behind, hesitantly embarking on an adventure on his boat the Teignmouth Electron.

Co-starring David Thewlis (ANOMALISA, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) and Ken Stott (‘War & Peace’, THE HOBBIT), and produced by Blueprint Pictures (THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, IN BRUGES), the story of Crowhurst’s dangerous solo voyage and the struggles he confronted on the epic journey while his family awaited his return is one of the most enduring mysteries of recent times.

“I am going because I would have no peace if I stayed.” Donald Crowhurst
