An enticing teaser trailer has been released for upcoming Apple TV+ drama-thriller series The Mosquito Coast, a new adaptation of the 1981 novel by Paul Theroux – uncle to lead actor Justin Theroux (The Leftovers, Mulholland Drive). The book was previously adapted by Aussie director Peter Weir back in 1986, with Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Pheonix starring.
The plot finds Theroux playing radical idealist and brilliant inventor Allie Fox, a father and husband who is forced to suddenly uproot his wife (Aussie actress Melissa George) and kids (Gabriel Bateman, Logan Polish) for Mexico when they find themselves on the run from the U.S. government.
The show comes from Neil Cross, creator of fantastic Edris Elba series Luther. Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt directed the first two episodes and is also on board as executive producers.
An Ozark-esque feel is present here, which is only a good thing in this writer’s opinion. The teaser, of course, keeps plot details under wraps, but what it does tease at is a tense ride as we follow this family’s “adventure”. Strong leads with Theroux and George too. Fingers crossed here.
The Mosquito Coast is scheduled for an Apple TV+ release on April 30th.
