“It all really f**king hurt,” the Oscar winner says of the intense work that went into prepping for the highly physical role of immortal (ish) warrior Andromache of Scythia. The weekly schedule consisted of striking, throwing, and weapon training, the latter in particular focusing on that axe the character carries.
“It became all consuming, because outside of the gym you’re either learning some kind of a weaponry skill, or I was on horseback for many, many hours,” Theron says, possibly hinting that the film originally had more of Andromache’s backstory. “There were bigger action sequences that we had on horseback.”
Take a look at the featurette below, which also features the film’s fight coordinator, Danny Hernandez. You can also check out our review of The Old Guard HERE and a list of other awesome action films you can watch on Netflix (Australia) can be found right HERE.

Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (LOVE & BASKETBALL, BEYOND THE LIGHTS), THE OLD GUARD is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.
