‘The Penguin’: Colin Farrell’s Batman Universe Series Gets Tense New Trailer, Release Date Confirmed

Comic-Con saw a tense and brutal new trailer unveiled for upcoming HBO series The Penguin, a spin-off from 2022’s Robert Pattinson-starring The Batman. We’ve got it for you to watch above. Apart from the new trailer, we also have the confirmed release date: September 19th on HBO in the US and September 20th on Binge in Australia.

This eight-episode limited series from DC Studios has Colin Farrell back as Oswald “Oz” Cobb / Penguin, the former chief lieutenant of deceased crime boss Carmine Falcone. As the trailer shows, we find Penguin one bloody path, determined to rise and become Gotham’s criminal kingpin – no matter the cost.

In an interview with HeyUGuys, Farrell provided an idea of how gritty the series would be – and it certainly sounds like they weren’t subject to any limitations.

“Oh…Tons of violence, abject darkness and a man and a great struggle to try and claw his way to the top. You know, there’s a power grab in Gotham now… It’s dark, man. [Showwrunner] Lauren LeFranc with her room of writers… wrote eight extraordinary episodes… I mean, just really, really bold stuff. I couldn’t believe that it got as dark as it gets.”

The cast includes Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Nadia Maroni, Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, James Madio as Milos Grapa, Scott Cohen as Luca Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo, and Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush.

The Penguin is executive produced by Matt Reeves (director and co-writer of The Batman), Farrell, Dylan Clark, Bill Carraro, Daniel Pipski, and Lauren LeFranc, the latter of whom also serves as the showrunner and writer. Craig Zobel (Mare of Easttown, The Hunt) directs the first three episodes.
