Wes Anderson is back in full swing, and yes, he’s bringing another wildly loaded cast with him. The first official trailer for The Phoenician Scheme has landed, teasing a new oddball journey co-written by Anderson collaborator Roman Coppola (The Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom, Isle of Dogs) and steeped in that precise blend of symmetry, whimsy, and melancholy that’s become the filmmaker’s signature. Take a look above.
Benicio del Toro leads the charge this time, joined by Mia Threapleton and Michael Cera, with supporting turns from Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Ayoade, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and more. Yep, it’s another stacked line-up for Anderson.
As for the plot, it’s as delightfully convoluted as one might expect. Del Toro plays Zsa-zsa Korda, a wildly rich aviator who’s walked away from six plane crashes and fathered ten children—but when it comes time to name an heir, he skips over his many sons and taps his daughter Liesl (Threapleton), a nun he hasn’t seen in six years. The trailer hints at corporate intrigue, family complications, a shadowy mission, and plenty of emotionally repressed stares across ornate rooms.
