Will we ever see an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand hit the big screen?
The Fault In Our Stars helmer Josh Boone is attached to write and direct the feature, but it looks like that project will have to wait.
According to Deadline, Boone is now moving onto Revival, another Stephen King adaptation that should be less of a mammoth task than The Stand. Mind you, Green is still planning to make The Stand, only now there are studio issues involved as well.
Warner Bros. has taken too long to move on The Stand and the rights have reverted back to CBS Films, which could shop the project to another studio or simply work out a deal with occasional feature partner Lionsgate. Warner Bros. was a big fan of Boone’s adaptation and had even suggested the possibility of a four-movie plan.
The epic nature of King’s tale means it will mostly likely take another while for a new studio to develop it to a point they’re happy with – even with the work Boone has already put in.
Nevertheless, it looks like we’ve got an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel Revival on the way. The book tells the story of a preacher who, after losing his faith with the death of his wife and child, begins experimenting with the power of electrical current. He starts to become a God-like faith healer, simultaneously opening a terrifying Pandora’s Box. Also in the mix is a young man dealing his own demons and who soon becomes involved in the preacher’s deadly practices.
Revival‘s screenplay has been sent to Universal, which will most likely take it on as part of their first-look deal with Boone.
Deadline quotes Boone as saying:
“When I read Revival, I was like, man, did you write this for me? I’d been on both sides of that pendulum. I call myself a non-believer, now, and when I moved to LA, it was like Neo being pulled out of The Matrix. Oh, my god, none of that stuff is true! But it was what I’d been taught and what I believed in since childhood. I believed in the devil, in Jesus, and even now as a non-believer, I’m still fascinated by that world and Revival is the scariest thing he’s written since Pet Sematary.”
Apart from King adaptations, Boone is also working on X-Men: The New Mutants and an adaptation of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.
