The Sun Never Sets Trailer Finds Dakota Fanning Caught Between Jake Johnson and Cory Michael Smith
The film centres on Wendy (Fanning), whose relationship with Jack (Johnson), an older divorced father, is thrown into uncertainty when questions around marriage, children and commitment start to pull at the edges of the relationship.

“You don’t want to get married again. You don’t want to have any more kids,” she tells him. “And I used to want that.” He offers her what he sees as a possible solution. “I don’t want you to wake up in 8 years and hate me for it. I think you need to spend a summer and see what else is out there. If you love us, you’ve got to find who you were before we started dating.”
So, what else is out there? Her ex. During the break, Wendy reconnects with Chuck (Smith), turning what begins as a pause for clarity into something far more emotionally complicated.
That push-pull comes through in the trailer’s sharper moments. Jack tells Wendy, “I’m in love with you. Anything that he can offer you, I will offer you,” while Wendy later lands a tougher blow: “You only wanted me when you thought you couldn’t have me anymore.”
Joe Swanberg and Jake Johnson Reunite for Alaska Drama
The Sun Never Sets marks Swanberg’s first feature film in seven years, with the filmmaker again working with Johnson following previous collaborations on films such as Drinking Buddies, Digging for Fire and Win It All. Johnson told People that the chance to work with Swanberg again was a major draw, while Swanberg explained that the story comes from a very personal place.
“This story is very personal, and draws from several autobiographical elements of my life,” Swanberg said. “Hearing Jake laugh (and cringe) when I recounted certain events, I knew we had something that could be entertaining, but also emotional.”
The film’s Alaskan setting also looks like more than just a scenic backdrop. Fanning told People that the landscape was crucial to the movie’s identity, saying the film would be “a completely different movie” without it.
“Alaska is almost the most important character in the film,” Fanning said. “It was truly incredible to be surrounded by the nature, and to experience the sun never really setting.”
Cast and Release Date
Alongside Fanning, Johnson and Smith, The Sun Never Sets also stars Debby Ryan, Anna Konkle, Lamorne Morris and Karley Sciortino. Morris’ appearance is also notable for reuniting him with Johnson in a scripted project for the first time since New Girl ended in 2018. Fanning and Johnson also serve as co-producers on the film.
The Sun Never Sets opens in limited U.S. theatres on August 28 before expanding wide on September 4.
