The official trailer has arrived for The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, an eight-part limited series that re-examines one of the most infamous wrongful conviction cases in recent history. Premiering August 20 on Disney+ (and Hulu in the U.S.), the series stars Grace Van Patten (Tell Me Lies) as Amanda Knox and is produced with direct involvement from Knox herself—marking the first time she’s had a creative role in telling her own story.

A case that captured the world—and crushed a life
Inspired by real events, the series follows Knox’s experience as a 20-year-old American exchange student in Italy who was wrongfully convicted of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher. It charts her arrest, trial, and eventual exoneration—while unpacking how media obsession, cultural miscommunication, and institutional bias created a storm that overtook the truth.
The trailer teases the emotional intensity at the heart of the show, including the police interrogation that Knox says was a turning point in her life. “I did not lose my shit on set,” Knox told Vanity Fair. “Except for that time. We spent two 10-hour days doing this scene from all the different angles over and over and over again. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to get that right… I just remember sobbing.”
A creative team with personal stakes
The series was created by K.J. Steinberg (This Is Us), who said she came into the project with clarity after meeting Knox: “A lot of people had zealous and fervent opinions… I read hundreds of takes on her… But as soon as I met her, I was certain of her.” Steinberg added, “Our show is not a whodunit. It’s about how and why did this happen.”
Knox is also an executive producer, alongside Monica Lewinsky, who she called “a fellow member of the Sisterhood of Ill Repute.” Speaking with Vanity Fair, Knox reflected on finally having creative input: “Today, I’m an executive producer and creative partner, whereas in the past, even those who have approached me with the best intentions, it’s always been, ‘We want to tell your story.’ I wasn’t interested in having yet another person’s voice telling the worst experience of my life.”
Grace Van Patten said she was deeply moved by the opportunity: “After a lifetime of having people create this narrative of her, I just found it so brave that she took this leap, and that she trusted me.” Knox returned the sentiment, calling Van Patten “deeply thoughtful” and praising her instincts.
Release date and episode rollout
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres Wednesday, August 20 on Disney+ and Hulu with two episodes at launch. New episodes will drop weekly, with the finale set for early October.
