‘The Two Popes’ Trailer: Netflix Movie Has Anthony Hopkins & Jonathan Pryce Playing Real-Life Vatican Leaders

Take a look at the official trailer to arrive for upcoming Netflix movie The Two Popes, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Benedict and his successor Cardinal Bergoglio respectively.

Based on Anthony McCarten’s 2017 play The Pope, the film looks at the friendship between the two religious leaders around 2012, before the transition that saw Bergoglio become the new Pope. The two deal discuss their faith, their differences and their weaknesses during a time of change in the world and in the church.

Having a two-hander with Hopkins and Pryce is certainly an enticing proposition, and the early rave reviews suggest that, thankfully, this a film that delivers the goods. It’s been a while since director Fernando Meirelles had a widely acclaimed film, but it looks like this is finding the City of God and The Constant Gardener helmer back in form. The script comes from playwright McCarten, who has three Oscar nominations under his belt and whose credits include The Theory of Everything, Darkest Hour and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Could there be Academy love for this one? Highly possible. The Two Popes will be getting a limited US release on November 27 before hitting Netflix on December 20.

Official synopsis for The Two Popes:

From Fernando Meirelles, the Academy Award-nominated director of “City of God,” and three-time Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Anthony McCarten, comes an intimate story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the last 2,000 years. Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.
