Dark Matter Studios has released the trailer for British indie horror film The Unfamiliar.

The film stars Jemima West (Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) as a British Army doctor who, after returning from a war, begins experiencing troubling visions at home. Her husband believes it to be PTSD, but perhaps there’s something much more malevolent at play?

There are a few creepy visuals in the decent trailer, suggesting this may be a title horror fiends should keep an eye out for. It could mark bigger things on the horizon for director and co-writer Henk Pretorius, who previously directed a number of small South African comedies. The Unfamiliar will be released in the U.S. on August 21st.

Synopsis for The Unfamiliar:

British Army Doctor, Elizabeth “Izzy” Cormack, returns from war to rekindle her relationship with her estranged family. Izzy notices numerous inexplicable activities in her house that her husband believes are due to her suffering from PTSD as a consequence of war.

Izzy militantly pieces the daunting puzzle together to reveal a terrifying, invisible enemy that has infested her entire family. In a heroic attempt to save her family, she is pulled into a dark underworld in Hawaii to explore ancient mythology.
