The Witcher‘s universe is about to get an origins expansion.

Netflix has announced a prequel series titled The Witcher: Blood Origin is officially in the works. The Witcher series creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will be serving as executive producer, with Declan de Barra (who wrote episode 4, “Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials”) on board as executive producer and showrunner.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is to be a six-part, live-action limited series set 1,200 years before the world we’ve seen in The Witcher. We’ll be going back to the elven world and witnessing the origins of the first Witcher, as well as the events that lead to the “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin.” said Declan de Barra. “A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilisations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonisation and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilisation’s true story behind.”

Said Lauren Schmidt Hissrich: “It’s an exciting challenge to explore and expand The Witcher universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, and we can’t wait to introduce fans to new characters and an original story that will enrich our magical, mythical world even more.”

Netflix is clearly keen on all things Witcher; no surprise, seeing as the first season of the Henry Cavill-starrer received around 76 million views in the first month and became the streamer’s second-most watched show of 2019. Apart from season 2 of The Witcher, also on the way is The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf, an anime movie that will tell the origin story of Vesemir, Geralt’s mentor and fellow Witcher.

The plan is to film The Witcher: Blood Origin in the United Kingdom. Stay tuned for casting announcements.
