Gemma Arterton leads the cast of Their Finest, an upcoming period comedy-drama based on the novel by Lissa Evans.

Also starring Bill Nighy and Sam Claflin, the film tells the story of a British film crew as they attempt to make a propaganda film during WWII in the hopes of boosting morale.

The film looks like a strong period drama. The trailer below nicely balances out humour with historical dilemmas relating to war and sexism, and shows off a cast that includes Jack Huston, Paul Ritter, Rachael Stirling, Richard E. Grant, Jeremy Irons and Eddie Marsan.

Their Finest, directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig (known for An Education and One Day), will open in the US on April 7 and arrives in Australia on April 13.

Official synopsis for Their Finest:

1940, London, the Blitz; with the country’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, and a makeshift cast and crew, work under fire to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits; and inspire America to join the war. Partnered alongside fellow screenwriter, Buckley (Sam Claflin) and eccentric actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), the trio set off to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American population. THEIR FINEST, based on Lissa Evans’ novel, ‘Their Finest Hour and a Half’, is a witty, romantic and moving portrayal of a young woman finding her way, and her voice, in the mayhem of war… and the movies!
