Fox Searchlight has unveiled a great red band trailer for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the upcoming crime-drama-dark-comedy from writer-director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths).

After months without her daughter’s murderer being found, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) decides to use billboards to send a message to the town’s chief of police. The situation soon escalates into darker, more violent territory.

McDonagh delivered very funny, very dark material with both In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, and Three Billboards looks to be right in that vein. The small-town USA setting certainly brings up a Coen brother vibe, the casting is impressive and the balance of drama and character-driven mayhem looks well handled. Here’s hoping this is as good as it looks.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, also starring Sam Rockwell, John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, Abbie Cornish, Lucas Hedges, Želko Ivanek, Caleb Landry Jones, Clarke Peters and Samantha Waving, will be opening sometime later this year.

Synopsis:

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson), the town’s revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is only exacerbated.
