‘Thunderbolts*’: Big Super Bowl Trailer Arrives with a Look at the Film’s Villain

Marvel Studios has dropped the Super Bowl trailer for Thunderbolts*, offering a fresh glimpse at the MCU’s new antihero squad. Along with the new footage, two new posters have been released (check them out below), and it’s now confirmed that Son Lux—the experimental trio behind the Oscar-nominated Everything Everywhere All at Once score—will be composing the film’s soundtrack.

The trailer leans into the team’s uneasy dynamic, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine making it clear that the Avengers “aren’t coming” before asking, “Who will keep the American people safe?” It appears that Valentina’s big plan will become much more clear here.

Backed by Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, the footage highlights rising tensions, particularly with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. “So… none of us can fly? So, what, we all just punch and shoot?” she asks her team – a group with, let’s say, different powers from the likes of Thor and Captain Marvel. “We can’t do this. No one here is a hero,” she says at a later point in the trailer, overwhelmed by self-doubt. David Harbour’s Red Guardian steps in with reassurance: “Yelena, when I look at you, I don’t see your mistakes. That’s why we need each other.”

Beyond the team’s struggles, the trailer also offers a much clearer glimpse of the film’s main threat. While particular plot details remain under wraps, the footage strongly suggests that the key supervillain in this chapter is The Void—a dark and destructive entity that, at least in the comics, is deeply tied to Sentry, aka Robert Reynolds, played in the film by Lewis Pullman.

The cast includes returning MCU faces: Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent. The lineup includes Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, and Wendell Pierce.

Jake Schreier, best known for Robot & Frank, Paper Towns, and Netflix series Beef, directs the film. Kevin Feige produces, with Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez serving as executive producers.

Thunderbolts* is set to open in Australian cinemas on May 1st and US cinemas on May 2nd.
