Take a look above at the official teaser trailer for Together, the feature directorial debut from Australian filmmaker Michael Shanks. The film, shot in Melbourne, Australia, stars real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco in a blend of relationship drama… and grotesque body horror. You know, date night material.
Brie and Franco play Millie and Tim, a long-term couple hoping a move to the countryside will give their strained relationship a new lease on life. No spoiler to say that it doesn’t. The effect teaser trailer, thankfully, keeps narrative turns to a minimum – hinting at an eerie and escalating nightmare that unfolds after the pair encounter an unnatural force. This supernatural incident begins to reshape not only their existence but their actual bodies.
Strong reviews for this one coming from the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and SXSW Film Festival screening this March. At the time of writing, the film has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shanks described his inspiration behind the project in a statement, saying: “I’ve been with my partner for more than 15 years. We met at ‘schoolies’—the tragic Australian version of Spring Break—and I’ve never been an adult without her. We’ve lived together, shared friends, meals, even the same air… This film is about the potential terrors of sharing a life with someone—the deep-seated fears of commitment laid bare. It explores co-dependency, monogamy, our joys and grievances, and ultimately questions whether we can ever really tell where one life ends and the other begins.”
Franco spoke about teaming up with his wife for the project during an interview at Sundance. “We’ve been approached to act in many different projects together, we’re very selective. We don’t want people seeing us on screen too often where they become sick of us,” he told Deadline. “This one felt right; not only was the script incredible, but our characters have been together over a decade, our relationship felt like it could lend itself in a nice way.” Franco joked about the experience, adding, “We joked this either ends in divorce or we’re more co-dependent than ever. Luckily it was the latter.”
Together, also starring Damon Herriman, will be released by Neon in U.S. cinemas on August 1st. Kismet Movies has it for Australian distribution, with a release date yet to be announced.
