The trailer has arrived for Tom & Jerry, the upcoming CG/live-action adventure that takes the legendary battle between the cat and mouse to the big screen.
Chloë Grace Moretz stars in the film, playing a hotel staffmember who is hired to help plan the wedding of the century. There’s just one thing in the way: there’s a mouse, Jerry, living on the premises. So, who better to hire than the result of “millions of years of predatory evolution”? Yep, Jerry’s longtime rival, Tom, is tasked with getting rid of that mischievous rodent.
The film is directed by Tim Story, known for the Ride Along films and the Fantastic Four movies from the mid-2000s, and is written by Kevin Costello (Brigbsy Bear, Jean-Claude Van Johnson).
It looks like a good bit of fun, and thankfully the slapstick brutality of the classic ‘toon looks to have made it through today’s sensitivity sensors (you never know what’s gonna spark an outcry these days). The original Hanna-Barbera animation has certainly endured as a beloved property among older generations, although we’ll see if it holds the amount of appeal needed to drive a box office hit.
Tom & Jerry, also starring Michael Peña, Rob Delaney, Colin Jost, Ken Jeong and Pallavi Sharda, will be hitting cinemas in 2021.
Extended official synopsis and rundown for Tom & Jerry:
One of the most beloved rivalries in history is reignited when Jerry moves into New York City’s finest hotel on the eve of “the wedding of the century,” forcing the event’s desperate planner to hire Tom to get rid of him, in director Tim Story’s “Tom & Jerry.”
The ensuing cat and mouse battle threatens to destroy her career, the wedding and possibly the hotel itself. But soon, an even bigger problem arises: a diabolically ambitious staffer conspiring against all three of them.
An eye-popping blend of classic animation and live action, Tom and Jerry’s new big-screen adventure stakes new ground for the iconic characters and forces them to do the unthinkable… work together to save the day.
