Watch: Tom Cruise Earned a Guinness World Record for This Insane ‘Mission: Impossible’ Stunt

He’s jumped off skyscrapers, clung to planes mid-flight, and held his breath underwater longer than some Olympic swimmers — but now Tom Cruise has added “official world record holder” to his list of jaw-dropping achievements.

The action star has officially earned a Guinness World Record for a stunt performed in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning — and it’s as wild as you’d expect. The record? Most burning parachute jumps by an individual. Take a look below.

As confirmed by Guinness, Cruise completed 16 parachute jumps while his chute was literally on fire — each leap involving a pre-soaked, fuel-drenched parachute that was set alight mid-air. Once engulfed, Cruise had to swiftly detach the burning chute and deploy a backup to land safely. It’s believed to be the first stunt of its kind ever attempted by an actor.

“Tom doesn’t just play action heroes – he is an action hero!” said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records. “A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It’s an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.”

The record-breaking scene was filmed in the Drakensberg region of South Africa, where Cruise and the Mission: Impossible team spent weeks preparing the elaborate sequence. Each jump was launched from a helicopter at altitudes of at least 7,500 feet, with the flaming parachute giving just 2.5 to 3 seconds before burning away completely — meaning Cruise had only moments to react.

Even more impressively, some of the jumps were completed with a 50-pound Snorricam body-mounted camera rig strapped to Cruise’s body, allowing for up-close footage of the fiery descent.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Cruise tackling the dizzying stunt:

Cruise’s daredevil credentials have long been part of his legend. In Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), he became the first actor to complete a HALO jump (high altitude, low opening) on camera. As Wade Eastwood, Second Unit Director and Stunt Coordinator on Fallout, once explained: “The audience can tell when something’s been cheated, so it’s important to be doing it all for-real.”

And Cruise doesn’t just break physical limits — he’s shattered box office records too. As Guinness notes, he also holds the title for most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies (actor), with 11 blockbusters between Jack Reacher (2012) and The Final Reckoning (2025). Said Glenday: “He’s still the actor with the most consecutive $100 million movies on their resume and the most successful leading action hero at the worldwide box office.”

The Final Reckoning, which opened globally in May, delivered the franchise’s biggest opening weekend to date. That being said, the film has been one expensive outing: reportedly costing a whopping $US400 million.

Tom Cruise plays Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
