‘Top Gun’ Sequel Casts Miles Teller in Key Role

The currently-in-production Top Gun sequel will also be starring Miles Teller.

Top Gun: Maverick finds Tom Cruise reprising his role as the titular daredevil Navy pilot, and Teller will be his protégé, the son of Goose. Anthony Edwards played Goose, Maverick’s buddy and co-pilot, in Tony Scott’s 1986 film. Variety broke the news, reporting that Teller competed with Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult for the role.

It’s a clear-cut connection to the first film, and another nostalgia factor to bring in its many fans. Val Kilmer is also on board, back as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

While plot details have been hard to come by, it is known that Top Gun: Maverick will incorporate drone technology and fifth generation fighters. Maverick will likely have to contend with a shift in the combat piloting industry and perhaps the end of dogfighting.

The film is being directed by Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in Oblivion and Teller in Only the Brave. His first feature was sci-fi sequel TRON: Legacy.

Cruise will next be seen in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Teller will be starring in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Amazon series Too Old to Die Young.

Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to fly into Australian cinemas on July 11, 2019 and US cinemas on July 12, 2019.
